My 1st Offshore Fishing Experience
Playa Hermosa, Costa Rica August 27-31
Playa Hermosa/Beautiful Beach.
Our first visit to Playa Hermosa, Chris was feverishly searching for contacts to take us off shore fishing. We both wanted to get on the water. After striking out at the beachHe searched online that night and the next morning we were on a 37 ft Bertram with two deck hands and a captain. I had no idea what was in store for me!
The ride out took nearly two hours. As we reached prime fishing water 5 lines went out and the fish started biting all I could do was wait for someone to instruct me, I had never done this with multiple lines before and was trying to stay out of the way, ducking and weaving like a boxer around the lines. One of the deck hands shoved me in the fighting chair and started reaching between my legs before my objection escaped my mouth. He grabbed hold of the the cradle between my thighs to shove a fishing pole into the cradle waiting there. My tension eased. As everyone else was frantically buzzing around me I held a fishing pole with a fish frantically trying to escape. He was unbelievable strong and would have pulled me out of the boat in an instant if not for the seatbelt holding me in the fighting chair. Now I know how it acquired its name. I caught the first fish, a Wahoo. Beautiful fish and delicious!
After the first the Wahoo the lines hit simultaneously making the deck hands really earn their keep, and actually the fish as we had no place for them. Chris had the belt on with a pole cradle, but it wasn’t secured to the boat like mine was. I was in the chair most of the time so the fish didn’t pull me over board. We caught 15-20 Mahi Mahi and the one Wahoo. I also hooked a sail but I couldn’t keep him on the line. Derek, one of the deck hands and I were the only ones who saw him breech twice. Such a beautiful site, I’m kinda glad I couldn’t reel him in.
We saw several pods of dolphins and numerous pairs of mating sea turtles on our way out and back. We were absolutely beat when we got off the boat, I could barely walk straight. All I wanted was a nap but Chris came up with the great idea to ask the chef of the AquaSport Restaurant, right on Playa Hermosa Beach, to allow him to cook up the Wahoo. He agreed! I watched Chris make a chutney, cook up the fish and plate it for us to enjoy. Unfortunately the footage isn’t awesome, all the lenses kept fogging up. The humidity here is great for the skin but not so awesome for camera lenses, even the iphone.
